Hello Seraph Families!

The Lenten season is here, this is a great time to talk about Christian Service. Lent is a season when the Catholic Church encourages us to fast, pray, and give alms. Christian Service is part of that almsgiving as "a work of justice pleasing to God." (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 2462). This letter is to outline some changes to Christian Service for this year, to explain the reasons for those changes, and to remind us all of what is asked of the students regarding their Christian Service.

The changes we are making are as follows:

  • School organized volunteer opportunities are now available to the students through a website.
    • They can select a project listed on the home page to find more detailed information about the date, time, and duties of the project. We will be adding more oppotunities as we go.
    • If they want to sign up, select the “volunteer” button and complete the pop-up form.
  • Student organized volunteer opportunities should be cleared with Ms. Florez to make sure it will be accepted as a project. Please do this through the Google Classroom messages. (See 3 for more info on Google Classroom)
  • Each student needs to enroll themselves in a Google Classroom Course for Christian Service. Most, if not all, students use Google Classroom already, but if your child is having trouble please tell them to see Ms. Florez in room 610 during break. The code for them to enroll in their respective classroom is found below as well as the number of projects required of them.
    • Seniors - Class of 2017 code: cxg51v
      • 4 projects during 2016-2017 school year
    • Juniors - Class of 2018 code: iiarpqr
      • 4 projects during 2016-2017 school year
    • Sophomores - Class of 2019 code: d43a5za
      • 3 projects during 2016-2017 school year
    • Freshman - Class of 2020 code: 2g2hmp
      • 3 projects during 2016-2017 school year
    • Once they’ve enrolled in the course in Google Classroom, an info form for each completed project is required. This form is in Google Classroom and can be submitted there as well.
    • Reflections for project(s) have changed. Previously, students shared aloud with the Augustinian volunteer. Now, students will write a single reflection synthesizing their projects. The rubrics for this reflection are in Google Classroom and can be submitted there as well.

There are a couple of reasons we are making these changes.  First, our Augustinian volunteer, Brendan Delaney, left St. Bonaventure due to health problems just before the second semester began.  We were very sad to see him leave and pray for his improved health.  He was assigned to our school to coordinate service opportunities, to encourage our students to take advantage of these opportunities and to schedule and engage our students in reflections on their projects.  The second reason is to streamline this process for me as I try to take over some of his responsibilities.  The added benefit to this is the ease with which both students and parents can plan for upcoming projects, and confirm completed projects.

As always, thank you for your support and for your patience in this time of transition.
