Government 12 cp

GOVERNMENT                                                                      one semester

Did you know that the United States’ Constitution with its 4,400 words is the oldest and shortest written Constitution of any major government in the world? Or shortly after the Constitution was signed, a proclamation by President George Washington and congressional resolution established the first national Thanksgiving Day on November 26, 1789. The reason: to give ‘thanks’ for the new Constitution. Did you know that our country got its name The United States of America when the Declaration of Independence was signed, not when the Constitution was signed?

Throughout the next semester we are going be examining the people and events that helped establish this great country. It was John Adams who said “children should be educated and instructed in the principles of freedom;” therefore we will start at the beginning and discover who exactly were the founding fathers and what principles did they want to instill in our new government and country.  In addition to learning why we revolted from England, you will understand the difficulty framers had in creating a methodology to govern. Furthermore, we will be evaluating why our first attempt at a government did not work; if the Articles of Confederation did not work, why does the Constitution work? Yes, there are many fascinating things to learn and understand about the Constitution and the basics of how our government functions. Moreover, this precious gift “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” as an American citizen do we really know what that means or the extent of our own rights? At the end of the class you will have the tools and means to use the information you know to be a politically active and a responsible adult in civil society.
